We at Diemech Turbines wish to share these pictures of engines when they arrive in our shop.  It gives a good idea of what damage can happen to engines and why an overhaul is necessary.  Any of these damaged parts can easily be fixed at our facility.
Deflector

A common problem is to have a deflector behind the outer combustion chamber came apart on D & E engines.  The metal pieces damage the compressor turbine blades causing an imbalance and further metal fatigue.  This metal then passes through the power turbines blades causing additional damage or failures.  A borescope inspection can reveal some damage to the blades but not the trailing edge damage to blades that can be caused.
Inner Combustion Chamber

Shown is an inner combustion chamber with metal fatigue potentially due to high engine temperatures.



Labyrinth Seals

Located in the inner combustion chamber they can only be checked when engine is dismantled.  The seals can receive damage due to hard landing ie. propeller strike which collapsed the bearing casing.

Outer Combustion

A lock attaches to the outer combustion chamber of the fuel manifold.  This can wear out lowering the combustion chamber onto the fuel feed tube to the manifold and causing the chamber to crack and clearances be out of specifications.

Outer Combustion

The badly worn outer combustion chamber is caused by vibration from the propeller or turbine.  The lugs are about to fail and the worn out portion of the lugs has been put through the compressor turbine and power turbine blades causing damage.

Labyrinth Seals

This white metal labyrinth seal on the compressor side is damaged due to storage length of turbine.  Storage caused the corrosion and dirt to built up.



Fuel Manifold

A fuel manifold where the outer combustion chamber attaches is badly worn and close to failure.  The metal in this section will cause damage to the compressor turbine and power turbine blades.  It is common for a 1500 hour turbine engine.

Stator

The stator guide vanes are damaged from high temperatures starts or prolonged high temperature operations.  Most 1500 hour turbines do see some repair to the guide vanes.


Seals

This turbine had been stored and the seals have deteriorated.  If this turbine is started there would have been damage done to the seal and shaft.



Compressor turbine

Compressor turbine disk that has seen over temp.  The blades are seriously damaged.



Compressor

Blades have corrosion and damage.  Casing has damage from starting engine with dirt, grime and corrosion.



Turbine Blades

Compressor turbine blades have damage from metal particles which have separated from deflector, diffuser vanes, inner & outer combustion chamber.  This is common on 1500 hour engines.


Diffuser Vanes

Two out of ten turbines show this problem and there is no explanation from the factory on why this failure occurs.


 

Bearings

This turbine compressor shaft bearing was damaged during shipping.  Shipping on via road causes damage to bearings and at time damage can be heard thru the exhaust area after shut down.
Bearings

This is a rear bearing on the compressor turbine shaft that has carbon built up.  With this built up the seal becomes inefficient making the problem worse.  The cooling holes and slots in the shaft have also carbon built up causing overheating of he bearing.  After shut down, the bearing can be heard before the shaft comes to a stop.

 

Nuts & Washers

Loose nuts and washers from vibration cause damage to compressor turbine blades.  It's cause improper torque of nuts.
